Getting yourself actively involved in activities can help you gain friends. Join a group of people to scuba dive. I am sure you’ll find friends there. Alternatively, simply open up a conversation in the hostel. Show your enthusiasm with a smile. You can say something simple like ‘Hey guys I am on my own. Mind if I join you?’ It’s easy to make friends from here.
Backpacking is an interlude for some from daily life and people around them. These people will take a break leaving behind work, family and friends but this is not necessarily a bad thing.
About your loved one who is not coming with you, devote time with him or her before you leave. Another way to deal with it is to come up with some ground rules about what’s acceptable while you are apart from each other.

The last reason why you should go backpacking is because you will be able to bring a new perspective with you when you get home.
How? You should try to participate in as much activities as you can while you are in another country. And the last tip I can share with you is that you should learn as much as you can about the culture of the people in the country.
