The telecommunications term broadband is found in many contexts, and has taken on broader meanings as the field of telecommunications has grown. In general, broadband communication refers to a multifrequency signal, in which individual frequency bands transmit specific signals simultaneously.
Because of this, the term has in general come to mean types of data transmission in which data is sent simultaneously regardless of the data signaling rate.
Because multiple signals are communicated simultaneously at the same time, broad band communication is very effective. Broadband in the phrase “broadband video,” has come to refer to video film in which the bit rate is so fast that the video can only be played by someone with broadband Internet connection.
Broadband Internet access is defined in terms of the number of bits per second that can be transmitted over the access. Initially, the cut off was at 56kbytes per second, with dial up Internet transmitting below that rate and other types of DSL and cable connections transmitting at higher rates. In 2006, the organization for economic opportunity defined broadband Internet access as access allowing transmission of at least 356kbytes per second. However, in 2009,the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), upped that limit and defined “Basic Broadband” as transmission upwards of 768 kilobits per second (Kbps).
More and more broadband Internet video applications are in demand, such as video conferencing, which currently require up to 6 megabytes per second transmission to work, and experts believe that the popularity of these applications will continue to grow, even as Internet access gets stronger and stronger. Currently, most broadband access is transmitted via DSL or cable, but newer fiber optic applications are already coming into use that will up the broadband Internet access to even speedier rates of transmission.
