PS3 Controllers have improved a lot since they were first outdone by those that are included with the Nintendo Wii such as the Wii Nunchuk. Based on human kinetics, the Wii Nunchuk controller was revolutionary and got the attention of the gaming world, such that it was only after three years from its release that a Wii console became widely available for purchase. PS3 controllers now also offer gameplay based on user movements, with on-board accelerometers to process a rush of spatial data. These improved controllers are now almost standard with the Playstation 3, and many software titles now find the advantage of the new capabilities to feature improved gameplay with a more interactive experience in all aspects.
PS3 controllers, however, may face their greatest threat from devices like the Wii Nunchuk Controller but also from Microsoft?s new line of Xbox 360 Controllers. Microsoft is working on an even more revolutionary kind of interactive controller, more so than the Wii Nunchuk Controller, that will continue to blur the line between man and his technology. These new controllers just as the Wii Nunchuk started, will eliminate the need for handheld controllers. These Xbox 360 controllers, unlike the Wii Nunchuk Controller, will be electronic eyes which sense the motions of players in space. Microsoft?s biggest challenge to the Playstation 3 and Wii is due out, at the latest, in two years and will be placed separately from the console to detect user movements, providing info to the console. Think of playing games with just your moving body!
This magic eye that Microsoft has been creating ? and promising will be available for sale soon enough ? will have the ability to track eye movements and change point-of-view in a first-person game. Think of a first-person shooter without controllers but with instead a compact gun as well as your own body and eyes! As you turn to the left the screenshot reveals scenery to your left side, and as you turn to the right the scenery shifts with you! This kind of system can essentially change gaming forever. While that is a sad thought it is ultimately the way of the world. One thing we?ve gotten so used to will be replaced by the new, and in this instance, likely the superior.
So while PS3 and Wii devices are quite advanced, the Xbox 360 controllers of the not-too-distant future may well have the final say on the future of fun at home. And as the three systems are chasing different demographics of overwhelmingly young and male action-gamers all the way to the older casual gamers it will be very interesting to see what happens next. Luckily, the gamers are likely to benefit from technological advances that will allow totally interactive gaming.
