Scamming Reciprocal Links – This is a pretty common scam whereby you offer reciprocal links to good companies with high PR sites, then after a while either block the outbound link or delete your link page. While this probably wont get you banned from Google, it definitely will get you blacklisted by webmasters everywhere, and that’s not something you want.
Buying paid links – Again, common practice amongst people who don’t really know what they’re doing. The problem with paid links is that, no matter what the vendor claims page rank wise, you can never tell what the value of the inks are. It is very likely that they have no weight and will be virtually worthless, and could even hurt the chance of the site ranking.
XML Sitemaps – It has been debated for a while whether these are useful or not. It was believed that they didn’t have any great effect when they first emerged, but tests have now shown that sites using sitemaps have an increased chance of being indexed, which is a good thing.
Stuffing Keywords – Search engine algorithms (Google in particular) are now so complex that they have become very good at determining keyword stuffing, the process of over using your chosen keywords in your site copy. It is a tough balance to strike, too much and you risk being banned, too little and you wont rank as well as others.
